MUNDO PATITAS CHIHUAHUA

:bulletblue:Platos, correas, collares, placas.

Looking to share Ai-Kon table

Unfortunately I was unable to get a table for Ai-Kon this year, and the costs to refund my flights for credits and such are pretty much the costs of the flight (something like a $20 difference). If anyone who has a table at Ai-Kon this year would be willing to share with me, I am offering:

:bulletgreen: to pay for the whole table, not just my half
:bulletgreen: room on my 6" stand to display your work (will help free up table space and make your art more noticable)
:bulletgreen: a free sketch commission
:bulletgreen: journal pimpage

If you have a table and wish to split it with me, please send me a note or e-mail at s.a.mcgowan[at]avintagesky.com

Thanks

Edit: I found someone to share a table with me this year, thanks!!

Retiring GM

I can't believe it's been a year already, how time flies! But it means it is time for me to hang up my hat and return to the world of senior from which I came. I had a great time moding the anime/manga and animation galleries and perhaps some day I will be able to return. Thanks for everyone's kind comments and support  Do feel free to contact me as you did before if you require assistance or advice on DA related things, just because I'm not a GM anymore doesn't mean I wouldn't still be happy to help you. People have started asking me about it, so I have decided to put up my convention list for this year. I'm open to suggestions for cons, but most cons either have bad dates (before school ends or conflict with other cons I'm going to), allies are full, or population is too small (I can't go if I can't make back the money in the ally), exceptions of course for cons who might want to bring me as a guest or to do a workshop/panel. There are also a few cons that I have attended in the past or are often recommended to me that I will not be attending, so I've made a list of them as well before they are suggested to me again.

Conventions Planned

:bulletgreen: Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo - April 24-25, Calgary - have table done
:bulletgreen: Otafest - May 21-23, Calgary - have table - done
:bulletgreen: Anime North - May 28-30, Toronto - have table - done
:bulletgreen: Ai-Kon - July 16-18, Winnipeg - have table
:bulletgreen: Otakon - July 30-Aug 1, Baltimore - have table
:bulletgreen: Anime Evolution - Aug 13-15, Vancouver - have table
:bulletblack: Convención de Juegos de Mesa y Comics - Nov 12-14 Monterrey - not yet registered

Conventions Considering

:bulletblack: FanExpo - Aug 27-29, Toronto - not registered (haven't decided)

Conventions I Will Not Consider

:bulletred: AnimeExpo - California - hated how the ally was run last year, will not be back this year.
:bulletred: Otakuthon - Montreal - objections to massive bootlegging in vendors and ally, do not want to be affiliated.
:bulletred: Animethon - Edmonton - boycotting horrible way the ally is run, will not consider even if invited.

DA Groups - What they don't tell you in the ads

DA Groups - What they don't tell you in the ads that you should know

Well, being that I'm sure at this point everyone's seen an ad in some form of another to make groups or to convert your existing club into one and all of these ads sound really wonderful and we where suckered into it. When I had converted our 'club' into a group a month or two back all of these things sounded really great to us and honestly many of the features that they have given to groups are really quite useful, but if you're looking for an ad to tell you how great these things are look no further than an actual ad for it: news.deviantart.com/article/10… But that's not why you're here and that's not why I'm writing this. You may have noticed that I used the phrase "suckered into it", a saying associated with being swindled, scammed or tricked, and this is because this is how we feel about it.

Every administrative member of my current "club" regrets turning our "club" into a "Group".

This is not to say that groups are bad. For some clubs this group system is a really great thing and it suites their needs. But what the ads don't tell you that for all the cool new features that you gain, you actually LOOSE really basic, important account capabilities that should for no logical reason have been removed other than they might be harder to code. So if your group depends on things like the ability to, say, anyway edit or control deviations, forums, chat rooms, whatever that it has uploaded other than deleting them, or if the ability to sending out notes from the group rather than just receive them, then the group conversion is not going to meet your needs because you can no longer do these things.

I've been on DA for over 7 years now, and for as long as I have been here, there have been club accounts. Now with the introduction of "groups" these clubs have the chance to convert to a format that for many clubs will help them and their members more effectively be an organization. Most clubs will choose to convert rather than start from scratch by making a new group. Now, I have administrated groups that have both started from scratch and carried over from conversion, and seen them both work and fail as groups.

So how can you tell if your organization will benefit from actually being a group?

If your group consists primarily of individuals submitting art from their own galleries that they have created to share with other members of the group and are simply tried of uploading them to the group gallery with links to the deviations. Then groups is definitely for you. And it is my experience that many clubs are really just that. Standard galleries already have gallery folders and the fact that groups advertise that they have that is really just an advert calling attention to the fact that this is a feature they did not take away from you, not a new or in any way innovative feature. What is however innovative is folders within folders for better organization. You only get this however if you have a group subscription. Note: all this talk about "Super Groups" is really just referring to groups with subscriptions. On that note, if you like having a sub for your club, or even require to have it to run properly (such as ours), also be prepared to pay for one, but not at the price of a normal sub.

It is advertised that the price to get a super group is $60 USD, and this doesn't seem so bad. Still a bit pricey. But keep in mind that what the FAQ (and most of the ads so far) doesn't tell you is that this is the promotional launch price. Once your year sub is up, expect to pay $120 for your next one. So if you require a certain CSS to keep your information manageable or control over the widgets on your page for more than a year to keep your club manageable and going (not just nice looking), you need to decide if these features are worth $120/year to have them. It is also noted that your group will be "highlighted" in the directory, but we have noticed that this has really done jack shit for our group's exposure.

So I guess in short, if your group is about uploading deviations of a particular theme, then go for it. You won't need a super group and you'll have a more efficient way of uploading to your group gallery. Another nice feature about this is that it links to the original deviation rather than having to tell someone to go to it, so all the exposure and faves go to the person who made the art rather than the club that uploaded it. Members can submit their art for approval through a system and admins can simply vote 'yay' or 'nay' on them.

The back room is a really nice feature whether you find the rest of the features (or lack of them) completely asinine or not. It gives you a wonderful forum in which to communicate with other members of the admin level and you can control the privileges of different 'status' within the group. You can find more about that here: news.deviantart.com/article/10… and whether I wish I had or had not converted to "group" on the particular groups that I run, I do admit that I would honestly miss the "back room" forums feature.

But is having a place to leave your administrative buddies notes really worth what you will loose in becoming a group? What will you actually loose in this conversion? Our first concern is that all our watchers would be lost. You will be happy to know that this is not the case, all your watchers remain in tact, though now they have the option to be 'members' as well. Why the bother having members be separate from watchers is completely beyond me. They get the ability to be able to submit art (pending administrative approval) but otherwise can't do anything else unless the administration customizes their can and can not settings. There is nothing else that they can do and to me there is no reason that 'watchers' shouldn't automatically be 'members' because they will receive all the same notices, journals and deviations a standard watcher will. That nit pick aside, the second concern you may jump to is the preservation of your journals. Don't worry, your journals will still be in tact, skins and all (and assuming you continue to have a super group, they will stay in tact).

Important things you will however loose in the order I found most irritating are:

1. The ability to send notes. I know that seems kind of shocking, but it's true. You can receive notes and thus reply to them, but if you need to send a note to someone from the group, perhaps say, to let them know they won a contest or to contact them about info you need or if you want them to help with something. So sorry, but you need to do these from your personal account so these notes will never ever see your group notes and will never be in your group note records. This completely defeats the purpose of HAVING group notes in the first place. So if you like having a note system that forces you to do everything from your personal account aside from receive notes, thus rendering group notes system useless, then this is the system for you.

2. The ability to organize notes. You know how in your clubs you could organize your notes into folders to keep track of contest submissions, ideas, event sign ups, etc etc so you could go back and find them later? Or delete useless notes that are no longer needed and simply take up space? If you find that having this ability is too convenient and prefer your notes in a single folder jumbled mess, then you'll be happy to know that they have taken that out as well. They have recently implemented a system that allows you to put a little star beside some notes and not a little star beside others, so if you find sticking smilie face stickers to your papers is an effective substitute for file folders, dividers or any sort of organizational system that physically divides anything, then this new "filing" system will suffice.

3. The ability to edit things created by the group account. If you have things like deviations, chat rooms, forums, whatever created/submitted/etc by your group, you can no longer touch these, it is as if it was submitted by a user that is now banned and that you have no control over, so I hope you are ready to remake them all. The "deviation migration" system tries to make up for some of this, by allowing you to assign existing deviations new URLs to deviations from someone's actual gallery. This is all well and good so long as your group doesn't deal with group exclusive content. If it does and you need to manage these (or god forbid have anything locked away forever in scraps now that scraps no longer exist in groups) then I hope you like deleting things and re-uploading them from your personal accounts because unless you get the members to upload them (non exclusively to group) so that you can have a findable URL that isn't already submitted to the group to migrate them to you have now defeated the purpose of group exclusive content. We currently have something like 400 deviations that we can no longer edit or control, and need to, so guess what we spend our time doing other than managing new ones? Oh, and I hope you didn't need to use your forums...

4. Group accounts loose their forums. I know a lot of groups who used their premium membership status to have forums for their users to use for events and other such things that groups are supposedly trying to make easier, but groups do not have these, not even super groups. So if your idea of "networking" is simply spamming the gallery with your pictures, then I guess yes, groups are good for "networking". But other than that, they don't offer anything else in the way of actual communication aside from administrators spamming you with journals, but this is not a group exclusive feature. Oh, Dev-meets? That's nice, but you can organize these just as easily by posting a journal about them. Watch: "Central Park, NY, 6:00 pm by the ugly statue on Feb 28th" I didn't need a widget for that. Groups are more concerned with allowing you to organize networking outside of groups than using groups as an actual tool for networking and I simply don't feel this is a useful attitude.

5. You can not be an administrator or contributer in more than 10 groups. This is self explanatory and not so much a pet peeve in owning or running a group, but rather one I have with wishing to be actively involved in more than 10 things on DA.

There are a lot of little other things that bother us and wish we hadn't lost (like the ability to browse all deviations in a group, not just folders or ability to see if someone has replied to a comment in the message center so you don't get 10 admins responding to the same comment because they can't see other admin comments on them.) but these four things listed above where so detrimental to how we ran our group, that we spend more time trying to figure out how to get around all the things we had that groups took away from us than actually doing new events and so forth that we where otherwise able to do. Had anyone actually given us this information other than a sales pitch on how great the NEW features where, we would never have bothered converting, or at least waiting until DA decided that these things where worth looking at.

If these things arn't a hindrance to your group creation and management, then groups is for you, and I belong to several  groups this system does work well for. But if you run a club that consists of more than just deviation dumping into the gallery and think that these are important features to have, then I would honestly recommend holding off on groups until these things happen, or just not bothering with groups all together as the group system isn't really tailored for anything else. the needs of RPG Groups, content exclusive groups, event heavy groups, networking groups, etc have not yet been met. Having a group has not given us more exposure than simply being an account, it has not encouraged more members to participate in things and it has not earned us anymore legitimacy or respect in the eyes of the community. Most of the widgets they brag about having you will never really use but simply look really great in the hype, and hype is a dangerous thing when there is no changing your mind after your decision.

Please note that all the information that I have given here is being given to you as a regular member who has owned, administrated and belongs to groups and I am in no way advocating for or against them. It may seem biased in that I have spent much of my time complaining about what I dislike about them, this is because I don't feel the need to repeat what every ad that has been shoved in your face for the past several months has been saying. I am, however, trying to give you my personal, unbiased experiences in using them in appreciation of the fact that I had wished that someone else before had done the same for me.

I hope this has been useful to you in deciding whether or not groups really is right for your club or organization.

Can I suggest myself for a DD?

I get asked this a lot actually, so while I am trying to write up a nice DD guide for people, I feel I should just state this for the record for my watchers right now.

Yes. You CAN suggest yourself for a Daily Deviation.

If you're going to try to suggest yourself to a GM though, do be courtious about it. "I thing I deserve a DD, check out my gallery" is a good way to get your note deleted. Suggest a specific piece (or a few if you can not choose) just like you would suggest anyone else :)

I hope this notice has been generally helpful.

If you notice this bug, please report it to me.

While I have your attention, I would also really appreciate it if you notice that a new piece that I submit doesn't show up in your inbox, please report it to me for testing. I will be uploading another test tonight. I know that there are people who arn't getting them, but testing is really hard if they arn't reported to me (I also know people arn't even aware I'm submitting or that this is a problem because they do not read journals), so the more people who can let me know that this is happening the easier it will be to fix. Thank you!

Now that school has started again, I don't have much time for myself here on DA, so I'm mostly only able to tend to GM related business atm, I will try to answer more personal messages when I can :)

A few people have left me messages letting me know as well as I have this happening with people that I watch as well. If you arn't seeing my newest deviation in your inbox, then you probably are having this problem too. I hear if you unwatch and re-watch me then this will fix the problem. In other news, school is busy, havn't really been able to work on any of my own stuff in a long while. Work and commissions. Maybe I'll upload some older stuff later or something. I might start posting my doodles while I'm out on my sketchblog again, which I feel bad for neglecting.
