Can someone talk to me about Fatal Frame?

So, the Fatal Frame series is a thing that me and my roomate have been trying to get our hands on forever, and we where recently able to acquire the first few games at a convention from an old games dealer. I'm a huge horror fan (it is my fave genre), I love ghost stuff and everyone and their dog has been telling me to play these games. I started with 1, because I like to play things in order and everyone tells me I should start there for the difficulty curve and because it's one of the better ones, and much to my surprise... I'm finding the game extremely boring.

I've been told by so many people that these are some of the best games, or even just things the genre in general has to offer, but I just don't see it. So far everything has been constant loud music and jump scares. Every time I feel like the game is building up to something or has created any sort of tension, the game's equivalent of a person in a rubber Halloween mask yelling "BOOGABOOGA" repeatedly in my ear shows up and I get really frustrated with it. It all feels really corny and heavy handed and lazy. Sometimes the game tricks me into thinking something mysterious and interesting is going to happen for me to learn about and solve, but as soon as anything on screen happens, the main character just outright tells me what I should do and spells everything out for me. And then the guy in the rubber mask comes back.

I really really want to like these games, I'm not super far into the first one, but every time I pick it up and try again, I get angry with it. Is this a constant in the game? Does the game get better later? Will there be better story telling? Do the other games do things differently? Are the other games better? I don't care about spoilers, I'd really just like an honest answer or conversation about what I can expect from the series. If these games are scary, or get scary, could you tell me why? If they get interesting, can you tell me why? I just don't find being startled by jump scares a horrifying, dreadful or interesting experience.
